Sunderland have announced that Nike will become their kit supplier ahead of the 2020/21 season, with the club opting not to renew their deal with adidas.

The deal will begin in June 2020, and will see the global giant supply Sunderland with their playing kit next season, as well as their training wear.

Speaking in an interview with the club's official website, owner Stewart Donald labelled the agreement as an 'incredibly exciting deal', which is certain to raise a smile amongst the Stadium of Light faithful.

"This is an incredibly exciting deal for the club, and I’m delighted to welcome Nike back to the SAFC family. Our colours and kit are steeped in proud tradition, and we look forward to showing supporters our bespoke designs ahead of the 2020-21 season.

"Nike’s presence is already woven into the fabric of our club, and indeed within sport around the globe, and they are renowned for innovation and excellence. We look forward to collaborating with them throughout what is sure to be a successful partnership."

Sunderland are currently challenging for promotion back into the Championship this season, and are sat fourth in the League One table.

The Black Cats are just three points adrift of league-leaders Rotherham United though, and Phil Parkinson will be hoping that his side can make a timely return to the second-tier in his first season in charge.

Sunderland return to action on Sunday, when they take on promotion rivals Coventry City in what is certain to be one of their toughest matches of the season to date.

The Verdict:

This is a promising agreement for the Sunderland supporters to hear of.

Nike are a globally-known company that have produced kits for some high-profile teams in the past, and Sunderland will be hoping that they're supplying the kit for when they're in the Championship next season.

There is obviously going to be some financial benefits for the club in this deal as well, and they'll be hoping that can help them in the future.

But with matters on the pitch being the main focus now, Sunderland simply need to keep picking up positive results to aid their promotion bid in League One, starting with a win against Coventry City on Sunday.
