Sunderland have announced that exciting young midfielder Elliot Embleton has agreed a new deal that will keep him at the club for at least another two years.

The 20-year-old has been with the Wearside outfit since he was six and is very highly-rated.

Despite that, he has only made a handful of appearances for the first-team since making his debut in 2017 but his reputation has risen after a very productive loan spell with Grimsby in the previous campaign.

Embleton made 27 appearances in League Two and impressed with his overall game.

Therefore, the Black Cats have moved to tie him down to a longer deal and they confirmed the news on their official site earlier today.

And, the player revealed just how pleased he was to secure a new contract with his local club.

"I’m really happy to have signed a new deal at the club and I can’t wait for the start of the season. I enjoyed my time at Grimsby Town and it was a great experience, but I’m ready for the next challenge and I’m happy to be back. I’ve been here my entire life, so I’m buzzing to be staying."

The Verdict

This is very good news for Sunderland as Embleton is an exciting prospect and will hope to go on to establish himself as a regular in the team this season.

He clearly has the ability to do just that and is the type of midfielder that the side lacked at times last season.

So, the new contract is great for all connected to the club and it gives Embleton a platform to push on now and concentrate on football.

Now, it's down to the player to have an impressive pre-season as he looks to get in the team for the opener in early August.
