Sunderland are expected to complete the signing of Pierre Ekwah on loan from West Ham as Tony Mowbray looks to strengthen his squad.

The midfielder is highly-rated at the Hammers but he has understandably found it tough to get near the first-team, therefore a temporary switch is seen as the next best step for his development.

And, according to reporter Alan Nixon, a switch to Sunderland is on the cards.

The update states that a deal is expected to go through and it could be one of up to three new signings that the Black Cats make before the January transfer window shuts.

The importance of bringing in a midfielder may have increased after Elliott Embleton suffered a serious injury last month, whilst Jay Matete was allowed to leave as well.

It remains to be seen when the move for the former Chelsea youngster is finalised but Mowbray would surely want this sorted ahead of Sunday's trip to Middlesbrough as Sunderland look to close the gap to the top six.

Defeat to Swansea last time out has left the Wearside outfit three points away from the play-off places.

The verdict

This seems as though it's the sort of move that will benefit all parties. Firstly, it's an area of the pitch that Sunderland need to strengthen and Ekwah is a good player who can help the first-team.

From West Ham's perspective, they're sending a talent to a big club and playing in the Championship is much better for his development than U23 football.

So, it's a great opportunity for Ekwah and it seems as though this is at an advanced stage and will go through.
