Leeds United boss Thomas Christiansen has confirmed that goalkeeper Andy Lonergan will depart the club for Sunderland before the end of the transfer window, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay on Twitter.

The 34-year-old has largely played the understudy to summer signing Felix Wiedwald, but has played seven times for the Whites this term due to spells of poor form from the German.

However Lonergan’s season has been blighted by errors, with his drop from a cross against Brentford a particular head in the hands moment for the former Preston North End man.

Leeds are likely to promote from within to replace the departing shot stopper, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell or Kamil Miazek likely to take up the role of deputy at Elland Road.

The Verdict

Lonergan only joined Leeds in the summer and following the signing of Wiedwald, was only really in Christiansen’s mind of a back up to the German.

However Wiedwald’s errors handed the player an opportunity to shine, but he completely failed to grab his lifeline and will now depart the Whites to likely become the number one at Sunderland and help drag the Black Cats from the relegation spots.

A bit of a failed transfer, fans will wish Lonergan all the best for the future.
