Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Dylan McGeouch with the midfielder available on a free transfer after his contract at Hibs expired.

The 25-year old, who made his Scotland debut last month, has been superb for the Edinburgh club over the years. He was a part of the historic Scottish Cup success and has played a key role since Neil Lennon took over.

However, with his contract at the club running down, there was plenty of interest in the player, with the likes of Rangers, Aberdeen and Blackburn keen on bringing him in, whilst Hibs also offered him a new deal.

Yet, it's the Black Cats who appear to have won the race, with Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie revealing that the player is on Wearside this afternoon to complete the move.

He also stated that a deal could even be announced today as the club continue their rebuild following relegation to League One.

Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin and midfielder Chris Maguire joined the Black Cats last week.

The Verdict

This would be a huge signing for Jack Ross and a real statement of intent by the club.

McGeouch was outstanding for Hibs over the years, impressing with his technique and passing ability and should be a leading player in League One.

Given the sides that were also in for him, everyone connected with Sunderland who was part of the deal deserves a lot of credit.
