Sunderland are edging closer to bringing midfielder George Evans to the club after agreeing a fee with Reading for the player.

That's the latest according to Roker Report, who state that the player will now leave the Royals pre-season training base in Austria to head to Wearside.

Further talks will then take place, although personal terms are not expected to be an issue, and Evans will then have his medical ahead of confirming the move.

His arrival will be a major boost for Jack Ross as he looks to reshape the Sunderland squad following successive relegations.

The former St. Mirren boss has already made several changes, bringing in new faces such as Dylan McGeouch and Chris Maguire, whilst many high earners have departed.

Yet, the Black Cats are looking light in midfield and Evans' arrival will be very welcome, with the Manchester City graduate having played over 50 games in the past two seasons for the Royals.

Sunderland's first game of the new season is against Charlton on August 4th.

The Verdict

This is a smart signing from Sunderland and they will hope it can get finalised as soon as possible.

At 23, he fits the profile for the type of player the Black Cats should be after and has a lot of time to improve.

More importantly though, he is an upgrade on what they currently have in the middle of the park and could form an effective partnership with McGeouch.
