Sunderland are close to agreeing fresh terms with Josh Maja after positive talks with Stewart Donald.

Maja’s current deal is set to expire next summer, which has cast his long-term future at the Stadium of Light into serious doubt.

However, according to Sky Sports, a new contract is seemingly on the horizon for Maja after talks with the club’s owner, Donald.

An announcement is expected shortly, with the 19-year-old seemingly ready to commit to the Black Cats.

Maja’s form has been excellent this season, with the teenager helping Sunderland into promotion contention in League One.

In 15 league appearances, Maja has scored nine goals and registered two assists, spearheading Jack Ross’ side’s assault on the automatic promotion places.

He completed 73 minutes of Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle, which helped move Sunderland above Peterborough United and into second.

Ross’ side are currently just three points behind Portsmouth, who lead the way in League One, although the Black Cats have a game in hand over their rivals.

Maja and Sunderland take a break from their hectic League One schedule next weekend, taking on Port Vale in the first round of the FA Cup.

The Verdict

This is a major boost for Sunderland, who will have been fearful of losing Maja due to his contract situation.

He’s been a shining light this season for the Black Cats, with Sunderland’s promotion hopes seemingly resting on his young shoulders.

Securing his future will give the club a huge boost this season and beyond.
