Sunderland are closing in on the appointment of Phil Parkinson, with the former Bolton Wanderers boss set to be named as Jack Ross’ successor at some point today.

Ross lost his job following the Black Cats’ defeat to Lincoln earlier this month, with Sunderland taking time over the international break to source his successor.

And, that man looks like it will be Parkinson, with reports from Keith Downie at Sky Sports confirming that the 51-year-old will be named as the Stadium of Light boss ahead of this weekend’s clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

Parkinson, who has had success with Bradford and Bolton in recent years, winning promotion in the lower echelons of the EFL with both, has been out of work since walking out on Wanderers earlier this season amid the club’s horrendous off-field situation.

He oversaw their relegation from the Championship last term, but had won promotion back to the second-tier earlier in his spell at the University of Bolton Stadium.

When he’s appointed at the Stadium of Light, he will be inheriting a side sitting ninth in the League One table and looking to work their way back into top-two contention after a tough spell under Ross.

The Verdict

Parkinson might be a slightly underwhelming appointment for Sunderland’s fans to get on board with, but in the short-term he’s a good option.

Promotion from League Two and League One with Bradford and Bolton, in recent years, tell you he’s got a winning mentality when it comes to the lower leagues, with the 51-year-old experienced enough to know what it takes to deliver what Sunderland need.

Longer-term, this might not work out, but Sunderland will feel they can reach their initial aims with Parkinson in-charge.
