Sunderland CEO Jim Rodwell has claimed that the club owe it to the fans, the players, and the game to ensure the remaining 2019/20 fixtures are fulfilled after six League One clubs joined together to emphasise their determination to properly complete the season.

It has been more than two months since EFL fixtures were suspended and it seems we may be moving closer to a decision over if, how, and when the 2019/20 campaign will be concluded.

The Athletic has reported that the EFL is set to curtail the League One and League Two seasons this week and will give clubs a chance to vote on how the season is completed, with a weighted points-per-game system the favourite proposal.

It appears a host of sides are determined to ensure that doesn't happen and joined forces yesterday to underline their stance, with Oxford United, Fleetwood Town, Ipswich Town, Peterborough United, Portsmouth and Sunderland all involved.

Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony released a statement on behalf of the six clubs on Twitter yesterday and Rodwell has followed that up with one of his own.

The Black Cats are seventh in League One as things stand and ending the game using a weighted points-per-game system would likely mean they miss out on promotion.

The Verdict

It appears Sunderland remain determined to finish the League One season on the pitch and keep their promotion hopes alive.

Given reports have suggested that the EFL was set to bring it to a close this week, it is going to be very interesting to see how things develop following this recent development.

Rodwell only arrived at the club last month, so he is likely looking at this as a perfect opportunity to try and get some of the fans on side.
