If Mohamed Eisa signs for Sunderland, they would then be real contenders for promotion in League One.

The Cheltenham striker scored 23 goals in his first season of professional football.

Eisa, 24, joined the League Two side from Greenwich Borough who play in the eight tier of English football.

And the Sudan-born forward has been linked with a move to the north-east, according to Sky Sports.

The striker played his role in a Cheltenham side that finished 17th in League Two, seven points off the relegation zone.

It is safe to say that without the former Greenwich Borough man, the Robins would have been in the midst of a relegation battle, if not relegated.

That was the importance and the impact that Eisa had on Gary Johnson’s side.

Having had a successful season last time out, clubs would have been alerted, other than Sunderland.

Peterborough and Portsmouth are rumoured to be interested for the striking sensation.

Averaging a goal every two games, and on offer for around £1 million should Sunderland choose to pay the money, it is relatively low risk for a club who two seasons ago were mixing it with the countries elite.

In League One you can get away with having a mediocre squad, one that has determination and effort above talent.

If you have a goalscorer and couple that with the grit and determination a typical League One side, you will generally challenge for promotion - nine times out of ten.

If Sunderland land Eisa, they can bank on goals. And a certain tilt at automatic promotion.

It would be some turn around for the forward and would be be able to adapt playing in front of a vociferous crowd at the Stadium of Light?

Eisa seems the type to be able to handle the pressure to progress and thrive in whatever situation he is put in.

If Sunderland sign him, he will grow with the club and you would imagine that within the next 10 months, the Black Cats and Eisa will be in the Championship.
