Sunderland manager Jack Ross has said he is tempted to throw winger Aiden McGeady straight into action against Burton Albion on Saturday, despite him having not kicked a football since last season.

McGeady has been out of action since the Black Cats faced Burton in the Championship at the end of last season, but having been an important player, Ross is considering throwing him straight into the action.

When asked if Saturday could be too soon for the winger to return, Ross told the Chronicle.: “It is quick, but I’m sure if you asked him he would say he was fine.

“He is the type of player who just loves playing.

“When you see him playing, the ball is the most important thing to him."

The Republic of Ireland international was the Black Cats' stand-out player and a rare bright spot in the club's dismal relegation to League One.

He scored seven goals and assisted five more, but it was not enough to save the club from the drop.

Sunderland have made a good start to life back in League One, however, and remain unbeaten after their opening seven games of the season.

They currently sit in fourth place behind Peterborough United, Portsmouth and Barnsley in the race for promotion from League One.

The Verdict

Considering the Black Cats have done as well as they have without somebody like McGeady in their side shows why they were many people's pre-season favourites to go up.

With the Irishman back in the squad they will have an extra edge on nearly all sides in the division.

Before his injury, McGeady was easily Championship standard and I would be very surprised if he was not a cut above the rest in the third-tier.
