Sunderland have finally shared some positive news after their disastrous start to the season.

Simon Grayson has revealed that forwards Josh Maja and Lewis Grabban are stepping up their recoveries and could feature soon.

18-year old Maja was a real bright spark of pre-season, delighting fans with his good play and quality finishing, however he required knee surgery that has ruled him out for the first months of the season.

Meanwhile, ex-Bournemouth striker Grabban is very close to returning having missed the last month after a good start to life on Wearside.

Speaking to the official site, Grayson highlighted the impact losing Maja had.

It was a big blow for us as a team when we were looking short at the top end of the pitch and for him as a person.”

The boss also added that the returning players will benefit the squad.

The competition for places should really come to the fore now, with players pushing each other.”

The Black Cats return to action this weekend against QPR at home, as they seek their first win at the Stadium of Light in 2017.

The Verdict

Whilst the major issues for Sunderland are at the other end of the pitch, the return of Maja and Grabban will be significant.

The youngster had an exciting pre-season and fans will be intrigued to see how he steps up, and Grabban brings experience and goals.

Grayson needs wins quickly and it won't do him any harm to have greater depth in the final third.
