Chris Coleman has described Elland Road as a great place to play football, as he prepares his Sunderland side for a clash with Leeds United in West Yorkshire this weekend.

It has been almost a decade since Sunderland last travelled to Elland Road, with the Coleman’s side having plenty to play for tomorrow afternoon.

Discussing how he will motivate his Sunderland squad, Coleman mentioned Leeds as a club ahead of the clash at Elland Road.

The ex-Welsh national manager told his pre-match press conference: “We’re going to play at Elland Road, great place to play football.

“Leeds United are a great football club and we’ll be taking loads of supporters there because this football club means a lot to so many people no matter where we are.”

Whilst Leeds have very little to play for during the run-in, Coleman is looking to guide Sunderland away from relegation trouble.

Sunderland currently sit 23rdin the Championship, eight points adrift of Birmingham City, who are beginning to open up a significant gap between themselves and the bottom-three.

Coleman’s side endured a mixed Easter, putting in an impressive performance on the road to beat Derby County on Good Friday, but failing to build on that on Easter Monday, as Sheffield Wednesday left the Stadium of Light with three points.

Earlier in the season, Sunderland, who were then managed by Simon Grayson, were beaten 2-0 by Leeds.

The Verdict

There have been some big attendances at Elland Road this season, and tomorrow shouldn’t be any different, with Leeds v Sunderland one of the biggest fixtures in the Championship this season.

Elland Road’s atmosphere should be good, particularly if Sunderland travel well, which will also be a boost for Coleman’s squad.

Sunderland need to relish playing at Elland Road tomorrow, as they are running out of time to start picking up results.
