According to an Italian sports journalist, Fabio Borini is closing in on a move to Lazio.

Gianluca Di Marzio is reporting on his website that Fabio Borini is due to meet Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi tomorrow to hold discussions over the move.

Sunderland have been expecting Borini to leave the club this summer following their disappointing relegation from the Premier League last year.

With the Black Cats due to play Championship football next year, they are bracing themselves for a mass exodus, including Fabio Borini.

Lazio have already agreed a fee with Sunderland to take the once-capped Italian striker to the Serie A.

However, the only stumbling block remaining for this move to go ahead is wages.

Inzaghi is set to jet out to Ibiza to hold negotiations with Fabio Borini but Lazio will request that he takes a slight wage cut to push through this move.

The 26-year-old is keen to return to Italy after spending his career flitting between his homeland and the United Kingdom.

Borini left the Bologna academy to join Chelsea in 2009 and also had a loan spell at Swansea City during that time.

The then-Italy under-21 international moved to Parma and was shipped out on loan to Roma before sealing a return to England with Liverpool.

From Liverpool, he joined Sunderland and is now looking to return to his native country.
