The Black Cats suffered yet another setback in their woeful season, as Tony Pulis' Middlesbrough side knocked Sunderland out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win at the Riverside.

Sunderland fans would of expected nothing less heading into this one, against a side that have redefined their season under former West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis.

Indeed, after first-half goals from Rudy Gestede and Martin Braithwaite, the Black Cats were looking worse for wear as they defended for their lives with damage limitation in the back of Chris Coleman's mind.

After the weekend's defeat, Sunderland will be looking to bounce back immediately with them currently sitting rock bottom in the Sky Bet Championship, but only 2 points off escaping the dreaded relegation zone.

Finally, something positive that will help with their quest to move out of the relegation zone.

Chelsea starlet Jake Clarke-Salter has joined the Black Cats on-loan until the end of the season, with the 20-year-old becoming the first signing for Chris Coleman.

As a growing influence in the England U'20 squad that triumphed in the FIFA World Cup last summer, he'll be a welcome addition with proven quality on the international stage.

Nevertheless, Sunderland's Twitter account (@SunderlandAFC) let fans know of their new signing:

After landing the defender that Chris Coleman craved, both he and the fans will be hoping that this man can produce the goods for the side as he looks to get them out of the relegation zone, come May time.

There's no doubt that Sunderland will benefit from adding the youngster to their ranks, having been on-loan at Bristol Rover last season he's already had a taste of the Football league, as he looks to be a solid defender.

The verdict

Sunderland can breathe a sigh of relief.

The defender has previous in the Football League, and on the international stage. So, he should be up to scratch and ready to get started straight away for Chris Coleman's side.

This is a player who Chelsea rate very-highly, so that tells you something about the player they're getting.

In a defence that's struggled to keep the ball out of their own net, the addition of the defender will allow for Chris Coleman to replace the ineffective Tyias Browning in their back-three.
