Sunderland and Stoke City are among a host of a clubs interested in signing Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson in the summer, according to reports from Football Insider.

The 21-year old has endured a hugely impressive season for the League Two side this season, making a total of 52 appearances for the Latics in what has been a disappointing campaign for the club thus far.

The academy graduate was subsequently named in the League Two Team of the Season as a result of his impressive performances, but is facing an uncertain future at Boundary Park.

The youngster, who is entering the final year of his contract at Oldham, is said to be attracting the interest from the likes of Preston North End, Sunderland and Stoke City.

Preston have a knack for signing players from League One and Two, whilst Nathan Jones will also be familiar with the lower leagues after his time at Luton Town.

Sunderland are believed to be wanting to strengthen their defensive options, as Jack Ross' men look to put the pressure back on the automatic promotion places in League One.

The Verdict

Edmundson would be a quality signing for both the short-term and the long-term, and could be available at a bargain price due to his contract situation.

Having seen him play on more than one occasion this term, he has a very talented defender, who looks so mature for his age.

He likes to play out from the back, and is a very powerful presence who would be a great option for any team interested in signing him.
