Hartlepool youngster Josh Hawkes is the subject of strong interest from north-east clubs Middlesbrough and Sunderland, according to the Hartlepool Mail.

The 20-year-old has played a starring role for Hartlepool in the National League this season, scoring nine goals in 27 appearances for the Victoria Park outfit.

It is believed Newcastle United are also battling for his signature, with the wide array of interest indicating Hawkes is extremely well-regarded in the north-east.

Latest reports have claimed that Hartlepool are attempting to fend off this interest by tying down their star man, with Hawkes' current contract set to expire in 2020.

Manager Craig Hignett has said these talks have been put on hold until the end of the season, but it is understood the player is eager to get his future sorted, whether it lies with Hartlepool or not.

Both Sunderland and Middlesbrough are still embroiled in promotion races within their respective divisions. The Black Cats are still in contention for automatic promotion from League One, while Boro are in with a chance of nicking the final play-off spot in the Championship.

The Verdict

There can be no doubt that Hawkes is destined for a bright future, but it is crucial he doesn't seal a move too quickly.

I can't see him getting many opportunities at Middlesbrough or Newcastle, but Sunderland could be a decent option if they stay in League One.

However, I think Hawkes' best option is to remain with Hartlepool until at least 2020. He can develop there, before moving on when the time is right.
