Sunderland and Hull City tussle for midfielder from relegation-battlers

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Sunderland are set to battle it out with Hull City to sign Dutch midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld from fellow strugglers Birmingham City.

Kieftenbeld was set to join former Blues manager Gary Rowett at Derby County in the summer but the move didn’t get over the line on Deadline Day.

He has started every league game for Birmingham since October but the midfielder is out of contract in the summer so Steve Cotterill may be forced to listen to offers.

He would surely be reluctant to lose a man who has been such a regular feature of his teams, especially to a relegation rival.

The report also claims that Tigers boss Nigel Adkins has been to watch the 27-year-old in recent weeks with a view to making a bid.

The Verdict:

Birmingham should do all they can to keep Kieftenbeld. Their results have picked up a touch lately and the Dutchman has the energy and quality that they will need to dig them out of the relegation battle.

They cannot let him go to a team who is down there with them – it would make the fans so despondent going into the second half of the season.

With his contract running out at the end of the season, any fee they would command is unlikely to be enough to bring in a player of sufficient quality as Kieftenbeld’s replacement.
