Sunderland are one of a number of sides hoping to lure Leyton Orient's Macauley Bonne away from Brisbane Road following his side's National League title win, as reported by Talksport.

Bonne bagged 23 goals for the O's this season, taking his tally to 45 in 89 National League matches since joining from Colchester in the summer of 2017.

The Zimbabwe international is African Cup of Nations duty at present, but speculation is raging that he is set for a big summer move.

Talksport have reported that not only is Bonne a target for the Black Cats, but he's also wanted by their play-off rivals Charlton Atheltic, as well as a host of other clubs, including Premier League sides Sheffield United and Leicester.

The 23-year-old spent time with Ipswich, Norwich and Colchester in his youth, but broke through with the latter and already has 57 League One matches under his belt.

He dropped down the rankings with the U's and played a small part in Lincoln City's National League title win as a loan player in 2016. He left Colchester in the summer and signed for Orient on a free transfer.

He's since thrived at Brisbane Road and now looks set to jump back up the divisions.

The Verdict

Bonne has certainly proven himself in the fifth-tier, but whether he can make the step up to League One or above is another thing entirely.

He would seem to be a wise capture for someone like Charlton, he might get game time there, especially if they don't go up. A move any further up could see him stagnate, much like Mo Eisa has at Bristol City.
