Jan Paul van Hecke has attracted interest from Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers with a view to a January move.

The Championship clubs were both eyeing a possible deal to sign the defender last summer, but no move managed to materialise.

According to Sussex World, the two clubs are set to compete with Middlesbrough in the closing days of the winter window to sign the 22-year old.

Van Hecke enjoyed a successful stint on loan with Rovers last season, becoming a key part of Tony Mowbray’s side.

But Mowbray is now in charge at the Stadium of Light and could look to reunite with the Dutchman.

The Brighton player featured 31 times in the league last season as Rovers earned an 8th place finish.

Van Hecke remained at the Amex beyond the summer window, and has made just two league appearances for the Seagulls.

However, Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi handed the centre back his first top flight start at the weekend in a 2-2 draw with Leicester City.

The Italian praised van Hecke’s performance, potentially indicating that he could yet still have a role in the team as they chase a top six finish in the Premier League.

The Verdict

The Dutchman performed well for Blackburn last season so it makes sense that he is attracting further interest.

While a move failed to materialise in the summer, there is still a week remaining in this window for a club to get a deal over the line.

The injury situation at Brighton may necessitate that he remains at the Amex, however.

That he made his first league start at the weekend could be an indication that the time has passed on a possible move this season.
