Grant Leadbitter could be joining Sunderland for a second spell, according to Teamtalk.

The 32-year-old made 32 league appearances for Boro this season, but they have a number of options in midfield so Tony Pulis is willing to let him go. His availability has got a number of Championship clubs interested due to his experience at this level, but the Black Cats may be able to fight them off due to his previous spell with the club.

He would go straight into the Sunderland first-team as the midfielder tasked with setting the tempo as well as helping break up opposition attacks by screening the defence. This would help deal with the loss of Paddy McNair if Brighton are able to sign him, although it is a short-term solution.

The Verdict

This would be a good start to Jack Ross' tenure because attracting players such as Leadbitter is the best way for them to use the status of the club as well as their relative financial might to their advantage.

The team needs improvement in pretty much every position, but midfield is a good place to start because they can dominate games by controlling possession which takes the pressure off the defence as well as providing the forward players with plenty of service. Therefore, top quality signings in this area will have the most effect on the team and are the best way to ensure they go straight back up.
