Sunderland have held negotiations with Jack Ross over their vacant managerial position, according to reports emerging from Scotland.

Scottish media outlet The Daily Record is reporting that Ross is on Sunderland's shortlist to assume responsibility of the first-team as their new manager and they have held talks with him.

Ross is a major target for Ipswich Town this summer and the Tractor Boys are eyeing either him or Shrewsbury Town's Paul Hurst as the successor for Mick McCarthy.

McCarthy left after six years at Portman Road and Ipswich could move for Ross if talks do not go well with Hurst.

Ipswich are waiting for Shrewsbury to play their play-off final match against Rotherham United at Wembley before holding discussions with Hurst over the vacant post.

Sunderland are planning on taking advantage of this by talking to Ross while he waits to hear back from Ipswich.

The 41-year-old is highly sought after following a successful year with St Mirren.

Ross guided the Buddies to promotion back to the Scottish Premiership, having previously impressed with Alloa Athletic.

Having won the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award, Ross held talks with Ipswich but Sunderland are now aiming to lure him to the Stadium of Light ahead of their League One campaign.

The Verdict

With the takeover approaching completion, it is time for a new era at Sunderland and an exciting young manager like Ross could definitely be the man to take the club forward.

Some may wish for a more conservative pick and try to bring in an experienced man at League One level, but Ross could be a risk worth taking.

It would be a statement of intent to beat Ipswich to his signature and the Scotsman could get Sunderland back on track with some upwards momentum after back-to-back demotions.
