Sunderland defender John O'Shea has admitted that a call-up to the squad for the World Cup in Russia would be the 'dream', should his side overcome Denmark in their playoff, which begins tonight.

The 36-year-old former Man United defender has been a crucial part of the Irish set-up for well in excess of a decade now, and has been selected by Martin O'Neill to travel to Copenhagen for the first leg with the Danes this evening.

And O'Shea admits that being selected for the squad in Russia in 2018 would be the perfect scenario, despite his domestic season currently turning into somewhat of a nightmare.

"To get the call-up to play in the World Cup in Russia would definitely be a dream scenario for me O'Shea told the Chronicle.

"To have the chance to go an represent Ireland in the World Cup would be incredible.”

The big defender was part of the Ireland squad during their last World Cup campaign some 12 years ago now in South Korea and Japan, where the Emerald isle were knocked out by Spain in the second round after an impressive showing in the group stages.

Ireland face a tough ask against Denmark though and they will know tonight's first leg will be crucial if they are to secure their spot in Russia next year.
