Sunderland striker Fabio Borini is edging closer to the exit door at The Stadium of Light as he prepares to undergo a medical at AC Milan ahead of his proposed switch to the Serie A giants, according to a report by The Guardian.

Fabio Borini has made it clear that he wants to leave Sunderland this summer following their relegation to the Championship.

Following the departure of Jordan Pickford to Everton and the imminent exit of Jermain Defoe, Borini is another man who is joining the mass exodus at Sunderland.

Borini is close to securing a switch back to his homeland.

AC Milan look set to win the race to sign the once-capped Italian international after they agreed a £5.3m deal for the Sunderland striker.

As part of the deal, Borini will join the Italian heavyweights on an initial loan and AC Milan will pay £1m up front to Sunderland with the rest to follow in instalments after his deal becomes permanent in summer 2018.

The 26-year-old has flitted between Italy and England during his career.

Starting out in the Bologna academy, Borini switched to Chelsea and had a loan spell at Swansea City before securing a return to Italy.

After a year on loan at Roma from Parma, Borini moved to Liverpool and then Sunderland.

He is now set to join AC Milan after Lazio were reluctant to match his £35,000 per week wages.
