Sunderland midfielder Luke O'Nien has posted an update on social media as he continues his preparations for the 2019/20 season.

The 24-year-old was an important player for Sunderland last season and made 52 appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats.

The midfielder scored five goals and provided six assists in League One, as Sunderland just missed out on automatic promotion.

The playmaker then starred in all three play-off games for the Black Cats, including the defeat to Charlton Athletic in the final at Wembley.

He also made eight appearances in Checkatrade Trophy as Sunderland made it all the way to the final and scored his spot-kick during the penalty shootout defeat to Portsmouth at Wembley.

The Sunderland players have just returned from a five-day training camp in Portugal and O'Nien has posted an update on his progress on social media.

The midfielder posted this photo from the pre-season training camp on his personal

/">Instagram account and added a message to Sunderland fans, saying: "Good week of pre-season work in Portugal".

Sunderland face Oxford United at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the new League One season and will be hoping to start the campaign with three points.

The Verdict

Sunderland will be one of the favourites to challenge for automatic promotion from League One next season, after coming so close last term.

O'Nien was an important player for Sunderland last season and I'm sure he will be confident he can play another key role this coming season.

All the player can do now is continue to work hard during the final couple of weeks of pre-season training and make sure that he is in the best possible shape for the start of the new campaign.
