‘Sums his season up’ – Many Derby County fans react to 31-year-old’s performance in Birmingham loss

A number of Derby County supporters have been lamenting the performance of forward Martyn Waghorn following the Rams’ latest damaging defeat against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The Rams headed into the game under real pressure after suffering four successive defeats in the Championship and knowing that they would have been put in an even worse position if they lost again. Derby could not build ongoing in at half time 1-0 in front and instead went on to lose the game 2-1, but they were spared somewhat by the results of Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham.

One player who endured a torrid afternoon was Waghorn, with the forward being wasteful in possession at times and not offering enough in key moments where he had chances to do more in the final third. It was a display that summed up the form he has been able to show throughout the campaign and it will be a frustration to him that he could not offer more.

Waghorn gave the ball away ten times and was also able to win just two of the 11 aerial duels that he contested. While he was also unable to register a shot on target and averaged a passing accuracy of just 77% (Sofascore). It was a performance that was not good enough really to help the Rams get anything out of a crucial game.

Many Derby fans were left frustrated by Waghorn’s display against Birmingham and were feeling that he has not offered enough throughout the campaign.
