Summer signings Cameron Carter-Vickers and Ben Heneghan have made their first appearances in a Sheffield United shirt today, having played for the side’s Under-23 team as per the club’s official Twitter handle.

19-year-old Carter-Vickers made the move from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur to link up with the Blades on loan for the remainder of the season, as he seeks to add to his four Spurs appearances with a season of Championship action at Bramall Lane.

The defender was often included in Spurs’ Premier League matchday squads last term but had to make-do with just two League Cup appearances and two FA Cup outings, in which he helped the club to victory on three occasions.

While 23-year-old Heneghan made the move south of the border from Motherwell to join Chris Wilder’s side, just a year after moving to the Scottish Premiership outfit following time at Chester.

The former England C international impressed though in his one and only season at Fir Park, appearing in all but one of their 38 league matches last term to help the club to a ninth place finish in the Scottish top-flight, three points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

And both men have made their first appearance for the Blades this afternoon by turning out for the club’s Under-23 side in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, as manager Wilder seeks to integrate them into the squad at Bramall Lane ahead of the rest of the Championship campaign.

But whether both men will be involved for their trip to Sunderland on Saturday very much remains to be seen.

The Verdict: It’s not particularly easy to incorporate new signings during an international break, but turning out for the development squad is certainly a good way of integrating them into their new club, and providing them with minutes on the pitch if needed.

And that is what Chris Wilder and Sheffield United have done with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Ben Heneghan, the latter joining the club on deadline day while the former was named on the bench in their success over Derby County last time out, but didn’t get to feature.

Both men will certainly bolster Wilder’s defensive ranks at Bramall Lane, and minutes on the pitch for the Under-23 side will set them in good stead ahead of the remainder of the Championship season.
