New Sunderland signing Callum McManaman has spoken of his desire to reignite his flailing career with the North East giants, via BBC Newcastle.
The 26-year-old made the permanent move to the Stadium of Light on deadline day last week to bring to an end a testing time for the winger at West Brom, for whom he only managed 25 appearances, and failed to net in any of them.
In fact, he was so far down Tony Pulis’ pecking order that he was shipped out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday for the second half of last season, although he didn’t fare much better there with just two assists to show from 12 appearances for Carlos Carvalhal’s side.
However, Sunderland boss Simon Grayson clearly felt that McManaman would be an asset to his Black Cats squad this season, and the winger himself has spoken of his hope that a move to the North East will resurrect his flagging career.
He said: ‘Footballers don’t like not playing.
‘Everyone’s looking forward to getting back going again [after the international break].
‘Especially me – I just want to enjoy it again, over the past few two years I’ve not really enjoyed it.’
These comments are sure to intrigue Sunderland fans, who saw their side suffer back-to-back Championship defeats prior to the international break to stunt their momentum after a promising start.
Nonetheless, McManaman, as well as fellow deadline day additions Jonny Williams and Marc Wilson, could be in line for their Black Cats debuts when they host Sheffield United on Saturday.
The Verdict: Callum McManaman looked set for an extremely bright future in the game during his stint at Wigan Athletic, yet his move to West Brom just simply didn’t work.
The 26-year-old struggled to replicate the dynamic, energetic displays that earned him the move to the Hawthorns, and a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season also failed to get the best out of the Englishman.
However, a permanent move and a fresh start at Sunderland could be what reignites McManaman’s career, and the man himself has placed great emphasis on him enjoying his football once again, as enjoying it is likely to see him bring his best to the pitch.
And Sunderland fans will be hoping to see just that as the season wears on.
