Sheffield Wednesday put four past Harrogate Town last night to win Papa John’s Trophy Northern Group H and many Owls fans have been raving about the performance of goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.

The two sides met at Hillsborough for their final match of the group stages level on points meaning whoever came out on top would win the group and secure a home tie in the knockout stages.

Summer signing Saido Berahino put Wednesday ahead from close range after 17 minutes while goals from George Byers, Sylla Sow, and Korede Adedoyin in an 11-minute second-half surge put the game beyond Harrogate, who finished with 10 men after Connor Hall’s red card.

The League Two side will likely feel that on another day things could have been very different, however, as they created plenty of chances of their own and kept Wildsmith busy.

The Owls backup goalkeeper was handed the start by Darren Moore and repaid his manager’s faith with an outstanding display.
