‘Stupid’ – Many Sheffield Wednesday fans react to flashpoint moment v Preston

Published

on

There was much excitement from the Sheffield Wednesday fans as Tony Pulis geared up for his first game as manager away at Preston North End.

The good spirits soon dissipated though.

Wednesday started out the game pretty well, restricting North End to half chances, but a flashpoint on 17 minutes saw the Owls reduced to 10 men.

Josh Windass and Joe Rafferty both went for a 50-50 ball, and whilst North End’s number 15 got to it first with his head, Windass went in with a high foot, which connected with Rafferty’s chest.

It was a poor challenge with no real need to go in with a high foot, and referee David Webb had no real option but to brandish the red card.

Many Wednesday fans were incredulous at first, feeling that they’d been cheated out of a decision, with some even saying it wasn’t a foul.

But replays showed that it was incredibly dangerous by Windass and his reaction to the brandishing of the card told the whole story.

Owls fans have taken to Twitter to lambast the tackle of Windass – it’s fair to say they’re not happy with the attacker.
