Blackburn Rovers' chances of signing Barry Douglas are slim despite the left-back departing Leeds United as a free agent this summer.

Leeds confirmed their retained list last night, with Douglas' name featuring.

The 31-year-old spent last season on loan with Blackburn in the Championship, making 30 appearances for Tony Mowbray's side and registering two assists.

Any chance of Douglas returning to Ewood Park has been thrown into doubt, though, due to the wage demands of the Scot.

As per an article in the Lancashire Live, there is little chance of Douglas returning to Blackburn unless there is a 'lowering of demands' on the player's part.

Douglas had arrived at Blackburn looking to boost the club's chances of challenging for the play-offs.

The left-back had won two Championship titles in the space of three seasons between 2017 and 2020, helping Wolves and Leeds into the top-flight.

However, Blackburn struggled to deliver a push for the play-offs despite some early season promise.

Mowbray's side drifted to a 15th placed finish in the Championship, having accumulated 57 points across the season, which left them 20 points adrift of the top-six.

The Verdict

Douglas is a high calibre of player and given what he's delivered in the Championship with Wolves and Leeds, it is little surprise that he has high demands in terms of wages.

Someone will pick Douglas up given the experience he's got, with someone in the Championship surely having room on their budget for the Scot.

He raises expectations within any club he plays for and you'd imagine that if he was affordable, Blackburn would be interested in reuniting.

Let's see how the summer shapes for Douglas.
