Salford City look to be leading the race to sign Sunderland's Will Grigg after making the biggest offer to the Black Cats for the out-of-form striker, journalist Alan Nixon has reported.

Grigg joined Sunderland from Wigan Athletic for a League One record fee of £4million on the final day of the 2019 January transfer window, but has so far endured a hugely difficult time at the Stadium of Light.

Since his move to the North East, Grigg has scored just eight goals in 48 appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats, and it now seems as though the 28-year-old could be on the move elsewhere in a bid to kick start his career once more.

If Nixon's latest update is anything to go by, then it could be Salford who prove to be Grigg's next destination, with the League Two debutants making the biggest offer with regards to paying the striker's wages during his time on loan with the club.

Current League Two leaders Swindon Town have also been credited with an interest in Grigg, but it is thought that they are currently unable to match the offer made to Sunderland by Salford in the race for the striker.

Sunderland are said to prefer the idea of sending Grigg to a League Two side, as they are reluctant to strengthen a potential rival in the League One promotion race.

The Verdict

This could be a really useful signing for Salford.

Despite Grigg's recent struggles, there can be no doubting he still has the ability to make an impact with the quality of his finishing, which would be a big boost to any hopes Salford have of reaching the play-offs this season.

You do however have to feel somewhat for Swindon here. Having just lost the mercurial Eoin Doyle following his recall by Bradford, Grigg could have been a decent addition for them as well, and to miss out by being outbid by a side below them in the league table will feel like something of a sucker punch.
