James Wilson devised a new fitness regime in order to adjust to United's style of play according to the Sheffield Star.

The Manchester United loanee joined the club in January and has already scored his first goal for the club, which was the opener in the 2-1 win over Norwich City.

Sheffield United utilise a high pressing style which is reliant on the forward players leading the way in order to force opposition mistakes and hinder their build up.

This approach has brought remarkable success because they are in with a chance of achieving back-to-back promotions with two points being the gap between them and Middlesbrough who are in the last play-offs spot.

Here's what Wilson had to say to the Sheffield Star: “Here, this is a high-pressing team. That’s what the manager wants us to do, press from the front and get on top of the opposition. So that requires certain things."

At other clubs, who play a different way, you might be able to get your fitness just by working with the ball. There are lots of different types of fitness, if you know what I mean, depending on how you go about things."

When I came here, I’d been working my way back from an injury and shown I was over that. But the type of fitness you need for first team football is different to the under-23’s because of the formations and personnel. But I wasn’t too far off that to begin with.

The Verdict

Wilson clearly had to make significant adjustments in order to settle in at his new club, but his intelligence and diligence on this matter shows his maturity.

His willingness to make these changes means that he has the right mentality to succeed, so a run of games in the first-team could give him the consistency needed to thrive.

Chris Wilder already has two talented strikers in Leon Clarke and Billy Sharp. However, Wilson is a more than capable back up in their quest for the play-offs and potential Premier League football.
