Reading can look ahead to another season in the Championship after securing their safety with a goalless draw against West Brom on Easter Monday.

The Royals have been flirting with the drop all season, but a run of three draws against promotion-chasing sides in their last four games has ensured their survival.

Jose Manuel Gomes replaced former boss Paul Clement in December, and he has galvanised the Berkshire club since his arrival.

The Portuguese oversaw a string of January arrivals that have helped steer the Royals to safety, with Chelsea defender Matt Miazga proving to be a crucial addition.

The 23-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Nantes, but has made a huge impact at Madejski Stadium by registering 16 appearances in 2019.

He has formed a solid partnership with fellow centre-back Liam Moore, and many Royals fans will be keen for him to extend his stay at the club.

Reading striker Yakou Meite has now expressed his desire to see the USA international remain in the Royals' defence next season.

"These last six months, he has brought us a lot of stability," Meite told Goal.

"He has a good mentality and of course we want him to stay. But we know it will be complicated. He is aggressive, he talks a lot to the players, and he is a warrior."

Miazga has one year to run on his Chelsea deal after joining the club from New York Red Bulls in 2016.

The Verdict

Miazga compliments Moore perfectly in defence, and Reading must do all they can to extend his stay at the club.

I sadly can't see Miazga getting many chances at Chelsea next season, so he should also want to continue his impressive development at Reading.

Miazga has barely put a foot wrong for the club since January, so it seems a no-brainer for all involved.
