Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is considering an audacious bid for Italian goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon following his departure from PSG after just a season, according to a report on Italian media outlet Coirriere della Sera via Talksport, as the 41-year-old looks for one final challenge before ending his career.

Buffon left PSG earlier this month at the end of his contract.

So what actually are the chances of Buffon signing for Leeds?

We discuss........

Toby Wilding

"You just never know.

"On the face of it, this just seems far too unlikely to happen, given Buffon's own top flight and European pedigree and Leeds' current position in the Championship.

"I would have also thought that the goalkeeper's wages would have just been too much for Leeds to pay right now, particularly if they are to balance the books with regards to other signing and contract negotiations.

"On the other hand, they were unable to bring Bielsa to Elland Road when very few expected that move to take place, and stranger things have happened in football."

“Oddly, yes I can. I think Marcelo Bielsa can pull this sort of deal off.

“Buffon has been a world great, he’s played right at the top but he’s never played in England. Our game brings different challenges and perhaps, just perhaps, Buffon wants to test himself here.

“Leeds are a great project too. They are a huge club, they’re had big European nights and won trophies. They’re down on their luck right now, but Bielsa can sell the same dream he bought when he came in.

“As for age; keepers can play on well past 40. I think this is a real possibility, the only issue might be wages. Let’s face it, a Chinese or American club would surely pay much more simply to have Buffon play there one season.”

George Brooks

"This would be a phenomenal signing for Leeds.

"Even though is coming towards the end of his career, Buffon is still a world class goalkeeper. He's one of the best 'keepers of all time and it would a magnificent signing for Leeds if they can somehow persuade him to move to Elland Road.

"This would obviously be a free transfer, but I doubt Leeds would be able to meet his wage demands. Paris Saint-Germain one of the wealthiest clubs in world football, so I'd imagine they were probably paying him significantly more than Leeds can afford.

"I think Leeds would have to sell Kiko Casilla for there to be any chance of Buffon moving to Elland Road and even then I'm not sure whether it would happen.

"I'm not sure whether Buffon would be prepared to drop down to the second tier of English football, having spent so much of his career at the highest level.

"As much as I'd love to see it happen, I think it's unlikely, but it would be truly remarkable if Leeds can pull it off."
