Many Stoke City fans took to Twitter to show their support for midfielder James McClean's first goal for the Republic of Ireland for three and a half years.

On his 80th cap for his country the Stoke winger put his Ireland side ahead in their friendly against Qatar. However, the goal wasn't enough to secure Ireland the victory with the game ending 1-1.

His latest international goal marked his 11th for his nation and the Irishman will be looking to kick on after finding the net on Tuesday.

Speaking on the Stoke City website, McClean said: “My last goal was the goal in Wales so it's been a bit of a while coming, but I think I've proven over the years I can score goals for Ireland.

"So hopefully that's the kick start for me going forward to add some more, the more people chipping in with goals the better for the team, hopefully that's the first of a nice little spell.”

The 31-year-old will be hoping he can continue his international form for his club side when he returns from international duty. His Stoke side take on Bristol City on Good Friday and will be looking to follow up their 1-0 victory over Derby by securing a further three points.

McClean has only scored two league goals for the Potters this season, something he will be eager to improve in the club's remaining eight games.

The former Sunderland man has been with Stoke since 2018 after joining from West Bromwich Albion and his no-nonsense, hard-working attitude has earned him a special place in the hearts of Stoke fans.

Here we look at some of the best reactions on Twitter to his goal.
