Sunderland squandered a one-goal lead to fall to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Fleetwood Town last night and many Black Cats fans have spoken out against manager Phil Parkinson after the game.

Parkinson named a much-changed and youthful line up for the EFL Trophy Group A clash and saw his side dominate in the first half, with Callum McFadzean's deflected strike giving them an early lead.

But as has so often been the case this term, injury problems frustrated Sunderland and meant that they had to make changes to their backline multiple times.

That allowed Fleetwood back into the game and they grabbed the opportunity with both hands as first Barrie McKay and then Mark Duffy found the net to sink the travelling Black Cats at Highbury Stadium.

Though both sides have confirmed their place in the next round, the result means that Joey Barton's men have won the group and will have a home tie in the knockout stages.

Sunderland will have to go on the road once again in what already looks likely to be a congested schedule and face yet more worries over injuries.
