Stoke City believe that Joe Allen will commit his future to the club and sign a new deal with a major pay cut, according to The Mirror.

Allen has been offered a deal which would see his current wage halved following Stoke's relegation to the Championship.

Stoke are confident that the 28-year-old will sign it to help their promotion push in the Championship next season.

Allen has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if a top six club pay £25m or more for his services.

But with a move to the Premier League big boys looking unlikely and the mid-table clubs unlikely to stump up that amount of cash for the Wales international, he could stay at the bet365 Stadium and play under Gary Rowett for Stoke in the Championship.

Allen is currently mulling over the contract offer and the Potters are hopeful that he will put pen to paper to commit his future to the club.

Formerly of Swansea City and Liverpool, Allen has played 199 Premier League matches in his career, scoring 16 goals and providing 11 assists from central midfield.

The Verdict

If Allen stays at Stoke, there is a very strong argument for him being the best central midfielder in the division.

It would undoubtedly boost Stoke's chances of winning promotion and fans would be delighted if he penned fresh terms, especially as his wages would be significantly less.

As we have seen with Aston Villa recently, if you put all your eggs in one basket and spend loads of money to try to win promotion and fall short, you will end up in major trouble so moves like this are advisable.
