Stoke eyeing deal for 30-y/o international ahead of January transfer window

Stoke City appear to be preparing for life without goalkeeper Jack Butland who could leave the Championship side in the January window.

Gary Rowett seems to have identified his number one target as well, with former England international Fraser Forster reportedly being top of his shopping list.

A source has told Football Insider that Forster is plotting a move away from the Saints in a bid to kick-start his career after a disappointing start to the season with the Premier League strugglers.

He is third choice behind Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn for the South Coast side under Mark Hughes at the moment.

Forster’s last competitive match for the Premier League side was in December 2017, before injury ruled him out of action for the remainder of the season.

But he has struggled to force his way back into the Southampton starting XI due to the impressive form shown by McCarthy who won his first England cap himself recently against USA.

Forster will be keen to have his long-term future resolved as quickly as possible as at the age of 30, he would be a good addition to the Stoke City side as they mount their challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League, following relegation last season.

The Verdict:

This would be the perfect move all parties involved.

Forster is far too good of an option to be wasting away at Southampton and he will be keen to secure some regular game time in the near future.

He would be the perfect replacement for Butland who is likely to move elsewhere in January, and would be an excellent addition for any Championship club.

Although the departure of Butland would be a hard one to stomach for Stoke fans, the former Celtic man is a ready-made replacement.
