Stoke City striker Benik Afobe has revealed he would have traded his own impressive start to the Championship season for a better start for his team.

Afobe has scored twice in the Potters' first three games, but Gary Rowett's side are still without a win, having lost one and drawn two of their opening three.

“I’ve scored two goals in three games and before the season started I would have taken that," the striker told the club's official website.

"But I’d gladly swap those goals for nine points on the board.

"Hopefully we will gel as a team sooner rather than later and turn these draws into three points.”

Rowett brought in many new faces over the summer and was lauded for the talent he did sign, bringing in Tom Ince, Peter Etebo, Sam Clucas, James McClean, Cuco Martina, Ashley Williams and Adam Federici, as well as Afobe.

But it has clearly taken the team longer to gel or Rowett longer to find his best team, than initially expected.

The Potters started the season with a disappointing loss to a rampant Leeds United, before drawing 1-1 with Brentford and 2-2 with Preston North End.

Next up for Stoke is a Wednesday night visit from Wigan Athletic to the Bet365 Stadium.

The Verdict

It is nice and selfless of Afobe to say these things, but it is also ultimately meaningless.

Three games without a win is not good at all, but there are 43 more games for them to play, so there is still plenty of time to turn it around.

But the fans and the board will want to see an improvement soon.
