Stoke City are set to sign Wigan Athletic midfielder Nick Powell, as Nathan Jones continues to add depth and quality to his Potters squad.

The former Man United man has impressed during his time at the DW Stadium, and that form has attracted the attention of Stoke, who, according to Sky Sports, are set to complete a deal to sign the attacking midfielder.

Powell has taken the decision not to renew his contract with the Latics, opening the door for a amove away from the club he joined on a permanent deal from the aforementioned United back in 2016.

The 25-year-old burst onto the scene as a teenager with Crewe, catching the eye with a stunning Wembley goal which only further convinced then United manager Alex Ferguson to part ways with a chunk of money to capture the youngster.

Things haven't quite gone to plan for Powell though since that move, with loan spells with the likes of Hull City and Leicester offering varying degrees of success.

However, he has sprung into life in the last few seasons and came into his own under Paul Cook last season, as his eight goals played a crucial role in the Latics fighting off Championship relegation.

Stoke meanwhile are looking to complete something of a squad overhaul as Nathan Jones looks to avoid a repeat of last season, with Powell seen as the ideal signing on a free transfer.

The Verdict

This is a fine piece of business for Stoke - if the club can get the best ouf of Powell.

Too often in his career has he flattered to deceive, and it remains to be seen to what level his abilities can take him.

There has to be something there with Powell given his ability and the recommendation of Sir Alex Ferguson, but he just needs to start showing it more consistently. If he can do that, then Stoke have a fine player on their hands who is still to hit his prime.
