Stoke City have unveiled the signing of Wolves defender Danny Batth on a three-and-a-half year contract, as revealed by their official site.

The 28-year-old had fallen out of favour at Molineux, struggling for game time not only in the top flight, but also during their promotion campaign last season.

He hasn't featured this season, instead going on loan to Middlesbrough who he has helped to a top six place in the Championship.

The commanding centre back started his with Wolves, coming through the youth academy in 2009. His first football came at Colchester, but he's also had loan spells with both Sheffield clubs.

He spent nine seasons in the West Midlands, making over 210 appearances in all competitions as they plummeted from the Premier League to League One, and back again.

He's been unable to force regular football under Nuno Santo and made just 16 appearances last season, the last of which came on the final day as they went down 3-0 to relegated Sunderland.

Stoke manager Nathan Jones told their official site:  “Danny is a dominant leader of a centre-half. He has got great pedigree having got promoted with Wolves last season and he’s someone we feel can take us forward."

The Verdict

This is a strong signing for Stoke.

Batth is experienced at this level and has the right blend of energy and character to take the defence forward.

They played a three man back line last weekend, but with Williams and Shawcross in that defence, it lacked legs.

He's done well at Boro this season too and comes match fit and up to speed with Championship football. Great business.
