Stoke City have registered their interest in signing Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove according to a recent report from The Scottish Sun.

Cosgrove has caught the eye with a number of strong performances in front of goal, with the 22-year-old already having 16 goals to his name in all competitions this season.

Stoke are said to have been watching the forward in action for much of this year's campaign, and could be tempted to make a formal offer to land his signature.

Michael O'Neill has recently been appointed by the Potters as their new manager, as he takes charge of a Stoke side that are struggling to stay afloat in the Championship this term.

They're currently occupying one of the places in the relegation zone heading into the international break, and O'Neill will be hoping he can build on a positive showing in his first game in charge.

The Potters beat relegation rivals Barnsley at Oakwell last weekend, and looked like a team that had found some much-needed confidence in front of goal.

But it seems as though O'Neill is already making plans ahead of the January transfer window, and they could certainly benefit from having additional attacking options available to them for the remainder of this year's campaign.

It's set to be an interesting transfer window, and some supporters will know that it's one that could make or break their season in the Championship.

The Verdict:

This could be a shrewd bit of business by the Potters if he hits the ground running.

Cosgrove has been impressive for Aberdeen, and if he can replicate his performances for the Scottish side with Stoke, then they surely won't be fearing relegation into League One this season.

The Potters need better attacking options in January, and it will have been a no-brainer for O'Neill to target Cosgrove who could be a so-called cheaper option compared to more proven strikers in English football.
