Stoke City are edging closer to appointing Gary Rowett's successor, following his sacking on Tuesday morning.

Luton boss, Nathan Jones has emerged as the favourite to take charge of the Potters, as they look to challenge for the top six.

In a post on the club's official Twitter page, Stoke confirmed that they are in talks over a deal to bring Jones to the bet365 Stadium.

"Stoke City can confirm that the Club is in discussions with Nathan Jones over the vacant managerial position."

It will come as no surprise to see Jones being linked with a managerial vacancy in the Championship, as he has done an excellent job with newly promoted Luton Town in League One.

Jones has led his side up to 2nd in the League One table, and they were looking like one of the teams to beat before Jones emerged as a target for the Potters.

There will be fears that Jones' potential departure could derail Luton's promotion bid this season, as he has been a key figure in the recent success of the team.

Many Stoke supporters will be excited at the potential of Jones' arrival, but they'll need to be wary of his lack of experience in the Championship.

Jones was briefly in charge of Brighton for two games as a caretaker manager in the second tier of English football but hasn't managed on a permanent basis in the Championship.

But Stoke are in desperate need of appointing Rowett's successor so that they can mount a late charge towards the play-offs.

Jones' first game in charge could be Stoke's trip away to Brentford at Griffin Park, where they will be looking to pick up a much needed three points.

The Verdict:

It's a gamble for Stoke, and they need it to pay off.

Jones has done an excellent job at Luton Town, but I fear that this job might be too soon for him, with a number of underperforming players currently on the books at Stoke.

If he can repeat the success he has had at Luton, then it would be an excellent appointment by Stoke.
