Stoke City have made an approach to appoint Preston North End boss Alex Neil as their new manager, according to reports from the Stoke Sentinel.

The Potters are on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Nathan Jones on Monday afternoon, with the club sitting 23rd in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Jones, who arrived from Luton Town last season, won just six out of 38 games in charge at the bet365 Stadium, and managed to guide them to just two wins this season.

It seems as if the club aren't wasting any time in finding his successor, though, with reports from the Stoke Sentinel claiming that they have made their first move for Preston boss Alex Neil.

The two clubs are said to have discussed the issue, with Neil set to take charge of the Lilywhites for their clash against Charlton Athletic on Sunday afternoon.

The 38-year-old is no stranger to being successful in the Championship, having guided Norwich City to promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2015.

The Scot has since enjoyed an impressive tenure of Preston North End thus far, and has took the Lancashire club to second spot in the Championship table after 14 games.

The Lilywhites are the highest goalscorers in the league, and have made an impressive start to the 2019/20 campaign.

The Verdict

It would be a serious statement of intent and a massive coup if Stoke were to appoint Neil as their next manager.

He has got his Preston side playing some wonderful football despite having quite a low budget, and he has also made them really solid at the back too.

I honestly don't see why he would want to leave Deepdale to join Stoke right now, even if the Potters are a bigger club than Preston.
