Stoke City made to wait in pursuit of winger with potential £60k-per-week on the cards

Stoke City must wait for Newcastle United to secure replacements for Matt Ritchie before they can sign him, according to The Mirror’s Live Transfer Blog [Saturday 7th July, 17:10].

Newcastle are willing to sell Ritchie for £12m but only if they secure Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace or Kenedy from Chelsea as his replacement.

Ritchie will also demand £60k-per-week from Stoke if he joins.

The 28-year-old has been at Newcastle United for two years since joining from Bournemouth in 2016 and he has scored 19 goals in 86 appearances for the Magpies.

He helped them win promotion to the Premier League and cement their place in the top flight, as well as previously winning promotion with Bournemouth.

The Scotland international, who is a left-footed winger, is being eyed by Stoke as they continue to try to strengthen their squad following relegation to the Championship.

Ritchie bagged 12 Championship goals in the 2016/17 season and that has convinced Gary Rowett to swoop for him.

The Verdict

Ritchie is a fantastic player at Championship level and would undoubtedly improve Stoke’s current options.

But at £12m and £60k-per-week, is he really worth all that money?

Stoke have got to look at the bigger picture here, look at what has happened to Aston Villa and invest that money more wisely.
