Stoke City are planning on offering fresh terms to Ryan Shawcross, with Gary Rowett hoping the centre-back will stay to lead the Potters’ promotion push next season.

According to a report in the Daily Star, Shawcross is set to slash his £50k-a-week wage following relegation from the Premier League.

However, Rowett is keen to increase that wage once again, in an attempt to convince Shawcross to stay put ahead of the Championship season.

Rowett, who has agreed a three-year deal to manage Stoke, has identified Shawcross as the right man to lead a promotion push in the Sky Bet Championship next season.

The centre-back has been with Stoke since 2007, making over 400 appearances for the Potters, with the bulk of those coming in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old, who has captained the club for large parts of his time at the bet365 Stadium, only agreed a new contract last summer, with that same deal running until at least the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The Verdict

Agreeing some sort of fresh terms for Shawcross will be a big boost for Stoke this summer, as the defender will be vital in the Championship next season.

The 30-year-old has been impressive at centre-back for a number of years and he is the perfect man to lead Stoke on their return to the Championship.

With Shawcross in their starting XI next season, Stoke will look a real force and a good bet for an instant Premier League return.

Adding to his squad will be a priority for Rowett, but retaining the service of his captain is going to be a big deal.
