Stoke City are hoping to appoint Derby County manager Gary Rowett as their new boss and want him to bring Scott Carson to the Bet365 Stadium with him, according to The Mirror's Live Transfer Blog [Monday 21st May, 15:43PM].

Stoke are looking for a successor for Paul Lambert after the Scotsman walked away from his job following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Lambert could not save the Potters from relegation after taking over from Mark Hughes with the club in a battle against the drop, and now Stoke are hunting for a new manager.

They have spoken to David Moyes but want Rowett as their new manager, having failed in an attempt to land the 44-year-old before getting Lambert.

Derby will let Rowett leave if Stoke meet his buy-out clause of £2.2m.

Rowett previously guided Burton Albion to the verge of promotion in League Two before lifting Birmingham City to the edge of the play-offs on a tight budget.

In his only full season at Pride Park, he led the Rams to the play-offs, but fell short in the semi-finals with a loss against Fulham.

If Rowett does move to Stoke, Derby fear he will take Carson with him.

Rowett is a big fan of the 32-year-old goalkeeper, who has plenty of experience in the top two flights of football.

The Verdict

Rowett probably feels that he has a better chance of winning promotion with Stoke given their parachute payments, which would allow him to spend more money.

And Carson would be an excellent addition as an experienced Championship option to replace Jack Butland - who is surely going to get a Premier League move.

The former England international would compete with former Ram Lee Grant at Stoke.
