Stoke City have had a £7m bid accepted for Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna on deadline day, according to the Football Insider.

It was reported by the Daily Mail on Wednesday evening, that Stoke had registered their interest in signing the young central defender, 22.

It was thought that Stoke had their original £5m rejected by the Scottish outfit, but they have seemingly made a breakthrough in their talks with a £7m being accepted.

Both McKenna and Stoke will now hold talks over a potential deal to bring the defender to the Championship.

Aston Villa have been a long-term admirer of McKenna and had a bid turned down for him in the summer, Stoke will be delighted to have struck a deal with Aberdeen for his services.

Newly-appointed Stoke boss Nathan Jones has reverted to playing three defenders at the back for the Potters, which has seen him in the market for more depth in his defensive areas.

It was also announced yesterday that Stoke confirmed the signing of Wolves defender Danny Batth, which added some much-needed strength in depth.

McKenna is a fully capped Scottish international and certainly has a bright future ahead of him, and Stoke will have some prospect on their hands if they can secure his signature before the 11pm deadline.

The Verdict

What a signing this would be!

McKenna is one of the best young prospects to emerge recently, and it would send a huge statement out to the rest of the Championship if they can secure a deal for him.

It's a smart bit of business by Nathan Jones.
