Stoke City could be without a number of first-team players tomorrow, with Benik Afobe amongst those doubtful for the clash with Leeds United at Elland Road.

Gary Rowett’s Stoke will get their first taste of Championship action this season tomorrow, with the Potters heading to Elland Road to take on a new-look Leeds.

Afobe, a summer signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers, is doubtful, having missed last weekend’s final pre-season friendly.

Rowett, speaking to Stoke’s official media, has been discussing his team, confirming that Afobe, alongside Erik Pieters, Bojan and Badou N’Diaye, is a doubt for the trip to Leeds:

Stoke are embarking on a new chapter under Rowett this season, with the ex-Derby County boss the man tasked with delivering a Premier League return at the bet365 Stadium.

Tomorrow’s clash with Leeds will give Rowett an indication of where his squad is at, with the Whites looking to put themselves in promotion contention under Argentinian, Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds don’t look set to be at full strength for Stoke’s visit, with Pontus Jansson expected to be left on the bench by Bielsa.

The towering Swedish centre-back has only just returned to training following World Cup duty.

The Verdict

This is frustrating for Rowett, who will have wanted a fully fit squad to choose from tomorrow.

Of course, Stoke will still be strong, but Rowett will be desperate to have Afobe available to him.

With Leeds missing Jansson, Afobe would enjoy his afternoon’s work against a makeshift defence.
